Bed bugs can be a nightmare to contain and get rid of. Finding them early, however, can save you a lot of time, money, and anxiety. Since bed bugs are active at night and hide during the day, they can be tricky to find unless you know where to look.

As the name suggests, bed bugs are most often found near sleeping areas, typically within about 8 feet. They are attracted to body heat and the release of carbon dioxide from sleeping people or animals. Places where many different people sleep are very susceptible to bed bugs and might include: hotels, apartments, trains, cruise ships, hostels, and dormitories.

Specific areas where bed bugs hide within rooms are bed frames, bedding, mattress seams, headboards, side tables, carpeting, window drapes, and furniture. When searching for bed bugs, it is helpful to have a flashlight and a credit card on hand. Check the bed area first. Start by removing all of the bedding and checking the mattress and box spring carefully. Pay close attention to the piping around the edges of the mattress, as well as all seams. Use the credit card to help comb through the mattress and get into all the cracks and crevices. It can also be useful for checking upholstered furniture.

When you are searching, you may find actual bugs (check out our article on how to  identify bed bugs), or you may find other signs of bed bugs. These signs might include:

  • Black spots of fecal material
  • Tiny white or translucent eggs that look like grains of rice
  • Red or rust-colored spots of blood
  • Shed skins that are pale yellow in color

Bed bugs are not just confined to bedrooms, however. As the infestation grows, you may start finding them in couches, around pet sleeping areas, or in the carpet throughout your home. Their hiding places may also be less obvious like inside the walls, behind electrical outlets, or behind picture frames or other decorations.
