If you have dogs or cats, you’ve probably already had many encounters with fleas. But did you know that fleas can also affect humans as well? Fleas typically go for animals with a lot more hair, but in the right situation, they'll be just as content feeding on the blood of people as with animals.
Most people know what fleas are, but still are unable to properly identify them. The most common flea here in Kansas City is the Cat Flea, which is also what most people picture in their minds when they hear the word. Fleas are tiny, coming in at only 1-2 millimeters long. They are barely visible with the naked eye! Under a microscope you’ll see that they are golden, yellowish brown and have legs fit for jumping. Their strong hind legs work almost like a windup toy, getting tense until they “pop” into the air at many times their own height.
How Did I Get Fleas?
If you hear a “meow” or a “woof” on a daily basis, you’ve got your answer. Fleas and ticks both like to find transportation from host to host and jump off when they perceive danger or a better feeding victim. The neighborhood pets are usually the culprits, so it’s important to treat your pets with flea control as well as have us come out and treat your property to ensure your pets stay healthy.
