Mice are incredibly good jumpers and climbers and can squeeze through a hole as small as a dime. It is no wonder that they can often find their way into homes. Here are some of the most common ways that mice enter houses and what you can do to keep them out.

Holes Around Utilities

One of the most common entry spots for mice is where utilities enter your home. Plumbing, gas lines, electrical wiring, etc. must enter your home from the outside. Unfortunately, installers do not always fill in the holes they make. Solve the problem by filling the holes with steel wool and the using expandable spray foam. 

Cracks and Gaps in Walls and the Foundation

They may not seem like a big deal, but even small cracks and gaps can let in mice and other pests. When houses settle or foundations start to crack, gaps can be formed. You can keep mice out by using cement mortar or sheet metal on large gaps and silicone caulk on small cracks.

Windows and Doors

Windows and doors are favorite entry spots for a wide range of household pests, including mice. Check your windows to ensure that there are screen in all of them and that they are intact with no holes or nears. If your doors and windows do not close snugly, consider adding some weatherstripping. You can also add door sweeps to all of your exterior doors.

Garages

Leaving your garage door open is a big no-no when it comes to pest control. It is especially problematic when it is open in the evening or overnight when mice and other rodents are most active. Even if you close it, unwanted critters may still get in if it does not close tight. Some weatherstripping along the bottom and sides can help a lot. 

Chimneys and Vents

There are a few areas of homes that need to be left open for airflow and water drainage including: chimneys, vents, and weep holes. Completely sealing these places up is not an option, so you will have to find another way to keep mice out. One good option is to buy hardware cloth or flexible wire mesh and staple or nail it over the openings. 

Vinyl Siding

Siding is a popular choice for home exteriors, but it can also be difficult when it comes to mouse control. There are two particularly troublesome areas, corner posts and J channels. Corner posts are where two ends of the siding meet at a corner. These are often hollow and if not correctly sealed can be a perfect opening for mice. J channels are used to trim around windows. They hide the ends of the vinyl, but may leave gaps. Fix these problems by stuffing the gaps with steel wool and then sealing with expandable spray foam or silicone caulk.
